Welcome back
A very warm welcome to the 2025 school year. For those new families that are joining our Morningside school we hope that you settle in well and become part of our wonderful school community very quickly.
We were very excited to welcome back all our children last week. It has been a fantastic start to the year and great to observe the positive and enthusiastic learning in the classrooms. Thank you to all our wonderful staff and parents who have supported our children to ensure the start of the year was very successful. Here are some photos from our classes last week.

2025 School Priorities
Our 2025 Annual Improvement Plan is aligned to the Department of Education’s Strategic “Equity and Excellence” plan. This year our 2025 priorities are:
- Continue to improve and extend student achievement in English and Maths.
- Positive engagement in learning and whole school well-being.
Parent / Teacher Information Night for Prep – Year 6
We would like to invite all parents to our Parent / Teacher Information evening that will take place on Tuesday 11 February. Class teachers will send information home to parents before the night and the night will be a “drop in” session to provide parents with an opportunity to meet their child’s class teacher and ask any questions.
Teachers will be available in their classrooms at the following times:
Years 3 – 6 5.00pm – 6.00pm
Prep – Year 2 5.30pm – 6.30pm
Specialists & Inclusion staff will be in the library: 5.15pm – 6.15pm
Please note, if you have any specific questions about your child’s learning, we request that you make an alternate time with your child’s teacher so that more in depth answers can be shared with you in a private setting.
2025 staffing changes
Welcome to the following new staff at our school:
Carlie Reason (Head of Special Education Services), Jessica Wood (Speech Language Pathologist – Tuesday & Wednesday).
Niamh McCotter (5NM), Laura Taylor (4LT), Kira Horne (2KH).
Amanda Butler (Dance – Semester 1).
Tanya Broadfoot, Brianna Amiet, Alana Wilhelmsen and Stephanie Savic (Teacher Aides)
Sarah Barrett has moved from Inclusion and is teaching Prep this year. Cindy Seng is teaching with Jo Chatterton and will be in the Inclusion team and the library. Deb Miller is teaching with Rachael Komen, teaching Prep – Yr 1 Health and will be in the library.
Holiday work
Landscaping on the oval terracing was completed over the holidays. Our Senior Toilet refurbishment is almost finished and we can’t wait for it to open.

Communication
At Morningside State School we endeavour to provide lots of information for parents to help keep them up to date with what is happening around our school. Our newsletter is emailed every even week fortnight and a link is placed on our app, SZapp. Our teachers will also be emailing home information via their class newsletters every odd week fortnight. Our school website www.morningsidess.eq.edu.au is also regularly updated. We encourage parents to contact our teachers and school if there are changes to family matters that might impact on their child at school. We can help to support your child if we are aware of these changes. If your phone, email and / or address details have changed over the break, please contact our office to update them.
Blue cards to volunteer
Parents do not need a Blue Card to volunteer in our school but all other volunteers do, including grandparents. The Blue Card details will be taken by the office on the first time you visit our school.
Supervision before and after school
Parents and students are reminded that teachers are not rostered on duty before and after school for formal supervision of students.
Our first bell sounds at 8.35am and formal learning commences at 8.45am. Children who arrive at school before 8.15am should be enrolled in OSHC unless they are enrolled in a supervised extra-curricular activity such as band.
Children in Year 1 – Year 6 who arrive after 8.15am should sit quietly under the roof in the Green Space until the first bell sounds at 8.35am.
Prep children need to be supervised by an adult (PKM - at the front of the school, PSB and PBM in the covered Prep eating area) before school every day and escorted to class by the adult at the first bell.
After school children should proceed directly home, unless they are enrolled in OSHC or a supervised extra-curricular activity. Prep children should be collected from their classroom by an adult.
Please note, the school playgrounds are “Out of Bounds” before and after school as they are under the license of OSHC and should therefore only be used by children enrolled in OSHC.
Assembly
Assembly will take place this year on Mondays for all classes in the hall from 2.10pm – 2.45pm. Parents are welcome to attend. On Monday 10 February (Week 3) our Term 1 Class Captains will be presented with their badges and our Year 6 School Leaders will receive their badges on Monday 17 February (Week 4).
Religious Instruction (RI)
Queensland state schools embrace a multitude of cultural, religious and non-religious beliefs. Under the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006, schools are to provide Religious Instruction (RI) if approached by a faith group seeking to provide RI and students of that faith attend the school.
Local religious leaders of the Uniting, Catholic, Anglican and Baptist faiths provide a cooperative arrangement of Religious Instruction (Christian based instruction) to Morningside students in Years 1 - 6.
Participation in RI is not compulsory. A student in Years 1 – 6 may only participate in RI if a parent has provided written instructions to the school. Parents can also withdraw their child at any time by contacting the office.
The RI program in 2025 will be delivered for 30 minutes each fortnight. The lesson will take place on Monday afternoons from 2.15pm – 2.45pm. As this is our school Assembly time, students who participate in the RI program will not attend Assembly. The first lesson in term 1 will be in Week 3.
Every Day Counts!
Success at school starts with attendance. The table below shows the amount of learning time a child can miss if they regularly miss school. Please support your child’s learning and ensure they regularly attend school. Where possible, we encourage parents to make any medical appointments and extra holidays outside of school time. Please contact the school if your child will be absent or if you need support in getting your child to school. A text alert is sent each day to a parent if a child is absent and the school has not been advised.
If your child misses…… | That equals….. | Which is…… | And over 13 years of schooling that is…… | Which means the best your child might perform is….. |
1 day per fortnight | 20 days per year. | 4 weeks per year. | Nearly 1.5 years. | Equal to finishing in year 11. |
1 day per week. | 40 days per year. | 8 weeks per year. | Over 2.5 years. | Equal to finishing in year 10. |
2 days per week. | 80 days per year. | 16 weeks per year. | Over 5 years. | Equal to finishing in year 7. |
3 days per week. | 120 days per year. | 24 weeks per year. | Nearly 8 years. | Equal to finishing in year 4 |
Mobile phones, smart watches and electronic devices
If students choose to bring their phone to school, they must switch it off as soon as they get in the school gate and sign it in at the office. The phone can be collected when the student is leaving school and can only be switched on when the student leaves the school grounds.
Smart watches and other devices can be worn, however, notifications must be switched off as soon as the student enters the school gate. This means that phone calls and messages cannot be received or sent whilst the student is at school. Notifications can be turned on again when the student leaves the school gate.
If notifications on the Smart watch cannot be switched off, then the watch must be signed into the office when the student arrives at school. The watch can be collected when the student leaves school but can only be used when the student leaves the school gate.
2025 School Camps
Year Level | Camp Dates | Camp Venue | 2025 Cost To be confirmed |

Kind Regards,
Sheryl Kennedy

Parent Representatives
We are looking for parents to volunteer as the Parent Rep for their child’s class. We have one Parent Rep per class.
The role of the Parent Rep is mainly to convey information to other parents in the class. This may involve information regarding school events, reminders or even organising a play in the park after school.
I will supply the Parent Rep with a list of parent emails for the children in your class. The Parent Rep will receive information in template form that can easily be forwarded to your parent email list.
Please contact your child’s teacher directly if you would like to express interest in volunteering for the Parent Rep role.

Picking up children during break time or assembly
If you are picking up your child during break time, please advise the office or your child’s teacher beforehand. It can be difficult to locate a student while on the oval or in the play area which may lead to a delay in the student making their way to the office.

Second break: 1.30pm – 2.10pm
Also, if you are planning to pick up your child during assembly (Monday afternoons between 2.10pm and 2.50) please advise the office or your child’s teacher beforehand. While students are attending assembly, it may be difficult to find them or get a message through to them.

Japanese News
あけまして。おめでとうございます。Happy New Year and Welcome to the year of the Snake.
I love the Japanese Zodiac calendar (originating from China but celebrated from 1st January each year) and who doesn’t love the Hebi. They say that the Zodiac Year takes on the traits of the animal assigned to that year. This week students have been learning about the HEBI (Snake) who is known for being intelligent, intuitive and elegant. They are deep thinkers, calm under pressure and highly determined when pursuing their goals. We have discussed how these qualities can help us in our language journey for 2025. We are in for a wonderful adventure. This semester:
Preps begin to explore the world of Japan, learning basic greetings and gestures and exploring the similarities and differences between our two cultures.
Year 1 and 2 will be exploring the concepts of ‘cute and cool’ exploring the world fashion in Japan and Australia and how seasons influence our clothing. We will be describing clothing items, their colour, size and other details.
Year 3 and 4 are going to be looking at folktales and mythical creatures, learning to introduce and describe personality traits along with physical attributes, likes and dislikes and other details.
Year 5 and 6 will be showing off their amazing Japanese language skills to communicate ideas relating to the concept of family and identity. They will use strategies to initiate and maintain conversations about their own family and/or a famous family.
Tama Meguro Junior High Student Tour – Coming Week 5
Thank you to those wonderful families who have been able to open their home to provide a homestay in our local MSS community for the upcoming Japanese tour direct from Tokyo Japan. We are busily preparing for our visitors’ arrival including MSS buddy classes, activities and final touches to our program. Tours bring much excitement and night time conversation about playground chats and new learnings these foreign students provide. We can’t wait to make them feel welcome!
Japanese Clubs for 2025
Back by popular demand, 2025 sees 3 Japanese Clubs on offer. There will be a J Club (culture), H Club (hiragana script) and K Club (kaiwa/conversational Japanese) to support our little cultural explorers and linguists continue to foster their love and enjoyment of this program at Morningside. Clubs will commence from Week 2.

Thank you for your continued support. Any questions, do not hesitate to contact me on jkwal0@eq.edu.au

District sporting trials 2025
Students at Morningside State school have the opportunity to participate in the Lytton District interschool trials if they wish to and are successful in the selection process. Trials will be held for the following sports in Term 1 and 2 – Cricket, Touch, Basketball, Australian Rules Football, Netball, League, Softball, Hockey, Union, Soccer and Tennis. Please note this is a high level of competition.
In order to select students from our school to compete at the District trials we hold in-school trials. This is due to Morningside State School only being able to send a maximum of 4 students. Please note that not all students will be selected. Students are expected to be competing at a high level of competition outside of school in order to nominate/trial. If students have not been able to compete outside of school and wish to trial, special consideration may be approved after communication with Mr Nolan. The top 4 students for each sport are selected based on experience, knowledge and skills performance.
*Please note that Athletics, Swimming and Cross country are conducted within our school sporting carnivals.
Please note that due to the nature of Lytton District Sport being highly competitive students must:
- Be 10, 11 or 12 years of age this year (born between 2013-2015).
- Be competing and training for the nominated sport, outside of school. Students who have been unable to do this may be given special consideration after a discussion with Mr Nolan.
- Write name down on sign-up sheet (at Mr Nolan’s office) or email nomination by the end of Week 2.
- Attend the in-school trial on the date/location listed below. The purpose of this is due to limited numbers being allowed to trial at District level. Students may or may not be selected at this process depending on skill level and experience.
- See or email Mr Nolan if you require further information regarding these trials and the process
In school trials will be held as follows:
Basketball – Week 2. Thursday, 1st Break, Courts.
AFL – Week 2. Thursday, 2nd Break, Courts.
Netball – Week 3. Thursday, 1st Break, Courts.
Volleyball – Week 4. Thursday, 1st Break, Courts.
Rugby League – Week 4. Thursday, 2nd Break, Courts.
Soccer – Week 5. Thursday, 1st Break, Courts.
Rugby Union – Week 5. Thursday 2nd Break, Courts.
Hockey – Week 6. Thursday, 1st Break, Courts.

Save the dates
- Year 3-6: Cross Country – Week 7, Monday 10 Hawthorne Park
- Prep - Year 2: Fun Run – Week 7, Tuesday 11 March. School Oval.
More details regarding these events will be released closer to the date of competition. Please contact Mr Nolan if you require any urgent information.
Cross-country training will be held every Friday morning, beginning in Week 3, at Hawthorne Park (meet at football club car park) from 7.30-8am, during Term 1. Students will need to be supervised by parents during this time. Mr Nolan will be present for these training sessions. Training is encouraged but not compulsory. Training is tailored towards Yr 3-6 students, but all ages are welcome.
AFL Premiership Cup visit
In Week 1, we were fortunate to have the 2024 AFL Premiership Cup pay a visit to our school. This was won by the mighty Brisbane Lions last year and students, parents and staff had the opportunity to not only see the cup up close but also to hold it! Thanks to AFL Qld who brought the cup to MSS and for running some Australian Rules Football clinics throughout the week.

For older kids, we have teams right up to U15s (our U14s won the Division 1 comp in 2024!!)
