Principal News

Welcome back to school
Welcome back to school and we also especially extend a very warm welcome to the new families that are starting at Morningside this term. We hope that you settle in and feel part of our Morningside community quickly.
We are looking forward to a great term of learning. Please take the time to read our newsletter each fortnight to stay up to date with what is happening around our school. We also keep parents up to date via fortnightly class newsletters, our website and SZapp.
We encourage parents to contact our teachers and the school if there are changes to family matters that might impact on their child at school. We can help to support your child if we are aware of these changes.
If your phone, email and / or address details have changed over the break, please contact our office to update them.
Our 2025 priorities
It was wonderful to see many families connect with their child’s classroom teacher at the end of last term and the beginning of this term for our first round of formal Parent/Teacher interviews this year. We encourage students to be reflecting on their learning in Term 1 and be striving to set learning goals to achieve their best this term.
As a school, our priorities are:
- Continue to improve and extend student achievement in English and Maths.
- Positive engagement in learning and whole school well-being.
2026 Prep enrolments
If your child will be turning 5 by June 30, 2026, they are eligible to enrol in Prep next year. To help support families and children entering Prep we have the following events:
- Prep Parent Information Session - Wednesday 18 June in the hall
- Individual Prep children and parent interviews – Term 3
- Prep Orientation Day – Wednesday 5 November
- Meet the Teacher Day – Monday 8 December
- Other transition support – On request
Please contact the office to place your child’s name on our “Expression of Interest” list, even if you already have a child attending Morningside State School so that we can keep you informed and help provide a positive and successful transition to Prep plan for your child.
ANZAC Day
Our school ANZAC Day assembly was held on Thursday 24 April. Our guest speaker, Major Mark Silby, spoke to the children about how the ANZAC values of mateship, resourcefulness and good humour relate to our Morningside students.
On Friday 25 April, our School Captains and leaders marched in the community march to Memorial Park. Well done and thank you to these students for proudly representing our school.

Mother's Day High Tea
Queensland engagement and welfare (QEW) survey
Our Years 4-6 students will be participating in the QEW survey again this year. Information has been emailed to parents by the office. The information can also be found at this link.
School uniform
As we start to move into the cooler months, we would like to remind children and parents about the current uniform policy which has been endorsed by the P&C. In winter, children can wear the current summer uniform with / or:
- Royal blue or black tights
- Royal blue tracksuit pants
- Royal blue fleecy jumper/jacket or school microfibre jacket
- Long, grey pants
Please remember to label all items and when items come home, especially hats, please check the name inside to ensure it belongs to your child.
Supervision before and after school
Parents and students are reminded that teachers are not rostered on duty before and after school for formal supervision of students.
Our first bell sounds at 8.35am and formal learning commences at 8.45am. Children who arrive at school before 8.15am should be enrolled in OSHC unless they are enrolled in a supervised extra-curricular activity such as band.
Children in Years 1 - 6 who arrive after 8.15am should sit quietly under the roof in the Green Space until the first bell sounds at 8.35am.
Prep children need to be supervised by an adult before school every day and escorted to class by the adult at the first bell.
After school children should proceed directly home, unless they are enrolled in OSHC or a supervised extra-curricular activity. Prep children should be collected from their classroom by an adult.
The school playgrounds are under the license of OSHC before and after school and should only be used by children enrolled in OSHC.
P&C School Disco – Friday 2 May
Prep – Year 2: 4.00pm – 5.30pm
Year 3 – 6: 6pm – 7.30pm
Thank you to our P&C who are organising and running the disco.
Tickets must be pre- purchased via QKR for $10.

Children must be collected from inside the hall at the end of the disco by an adult. Children will not be released to walk home or meet collecting adult outside the hall.
Phones are not permitted at the disco. If they are brought to the disco they will need to be signed in at the door on arrival and can be collected as the child leaves the hall to go home.

Have a wonderful fortnight! We are looking forward to a fantastic term!

Heads up! Japanese student tour coming Term 3!
It is with great excitement l am able to share that Morningside State School has accepted a second Japanese student tour of 20 primary school students from Minato prefecture located in central Tokyo in Term 3 of this year. The student tour group will be attending English lessons onsite as well as doing some integration into our daily school life here at Morningside. This experience provides a wonderful opportunity for our Morningside students to practice using some of their Japanese language while sharing our warm Aussie culture and English language our visitors. If you have a spare room, the organising Agent AJSP is looking for home stay families for the duration of their stay. Remuneration provided. See attached flyer for details.

Morningside SS Japan travel scrapbook
A recent news article has revealed that Japan is the fourth most visited international overseas destination behind New Zealand, India and Indonesia. I often hear students talk about an upcoming trip to Japan or students returning from their adventures with a bit of ‘real’ life experience and photos to share in our lessons. If you would like to participate, please send 3-5 photos and l can make a page for our shared Japan Travel scrapbook. An example from Sept 2023 Silby Family trip.

Clubs update
J Club is on again this term, open to all grade 1 through 6 students every Friday first break. It has been highly popular in the lower school and I thank the wonderful grade 4&5 students who come each week to help mentor the younger children. This term will see some more snake craft, Japanese Children’s Day origami, kendama play and much more. Fun times!
H Club and K Club continue on Tuesday both breaks. We have some fantastic hiragana knowledge and our pronunciation is superb!

Thank you for your continued support. Any questions, do not hesitate to contact me on jkwal0@eq.edu.au

OSHC News

So much fun was had at our most recent vacation care! From learning about native bees to putt putt, and everything in between, there was always something to get involved in. A highlight of the program was our excursion to Thunderbird Park, where the kids channelled their Minecraft skills into real life and used picks to fossick for Thundereggs!
This term, our Grade 4-6 children will be participating in OzHarvest’s FEAST program where they will learn to cook and discover the impact of food waste. During this program, the children will put everything they have learnt along the way and will work together to create a recipe book, including two of their own recipes. Watch this space!
